Resource Team — Privacy
The R0ice Resource Team lets volunteers lend idle computer time to
r0ice.com/resource-team. This page lists exactly what
each Resource Team app sends and stores. It covers the Windows app (R0ice Community Reader)
and the older browser extension.

Windows app (R0ice Community Reader)
What it connects to
- r0ice.com — to fetch work items, send back results, check for updates, and send a short status report (below).
- Ollama, the open-source program that runs the AI model, on your own PC (127.0.0.1). During first-time setup it downloads Ollama and a reading model from Ollama's official servers.
- youtube.com — only for caption jobs: to fetch the public captions of the one public video in that job.
What leaves your machine
- Job results — the text the model wrote for each job. Every job's input is public material (public-domain books, public documentation, public data), so results contain nothing from your PC.
- A status report every 10 minutes while the app is reading, and about every 30 seconds while it is starting up, idle or paused, containing:
- your operating system type, processor model and core count, amount of memory, graphics card model and its memory, and whether Ollama is installed;
- the app's version and current state (for example reading, paused, or setting up), its setup note and its most recent error message;
- the last ~20 lines of the app's own log, so problems can be fixed without asking you for screenshots. These lines can contain folder paths on your PC, and a folder path can include your Windows user name.
- from version 0.5.12: your graphics card's average power draw and how busy it was since the previous report, and how many words and pieces the app has read today. These numbers let us show how efficiently each machine reads.
Checks for games and streaming software happen on your PC only. The report says only that the
app paused and the general reason (a game, streaming, a quiet-hours window, or your pause button),
never which program you were running.
What it never does
- Never reads your files, documents, browsing history, or accounts
- Never changes your power, graphics or system settings. An optional power check exists as a separate
download; it changes nothing unless you run it yourself and type Y.
- Pauses itself while you play supported games or stream, and has a one-click pause
Browser extension (older)
- Connects to r0ice.com to fetch a work item (a single YouTube video ID) and send back the result, and to youtube.com to look up that video's public caption data.
- What leaves your browser: only that video ID and the public caption text (or a status like "no captions available") for that one video.
- Never reads your browsing history, bookmarks, or any tab you have open.
What is stored, and who sees it
- A randomly generated token and a handle/nickname. If you do not choose a handle, the app uses your computer's name (its host name) as your handle, and that name is shown on the public team board. No email, no account, no tracking cookies.
- Public: your handle, how many jobs your machine completed, and when it was last active, on the team board.
- Private to R0ice: the status reports above (hardware, app state, recent log lines, power figures), used only to keep the app working and to measure efficiency. They are never sold or shared.
- Uninstalling stops all reports. Your past contributions stay credited to your handle; to have your
stored status reports deleted, email the address below.
