The idea

Bishop aims at f7, c3 and d3 build a quiet centre, castle early. Later you push d4 when it is ready.

When they go another way

• If they play 3...Nf6: Against the Two Knights, d3 guards e4 so nothing hangs. Castle, Re1 and c3, then the same slow build as the main line.
