How do you stop losing pieces in chess?

Before every move, look at what your opponent's last move attacks. If a piece of yours is attacked and nothing guards it, move it to a safe square, guard it, or take the attacker.

Then check your own move: does it leave anything unguarded? Most beginner games are lost to a piece left hanging, not to a deep plan.

A piece attacked by something worth less (a pawn attacking your knight) is in danger even if it is guarded.
