How does the rook move in chess?

The rook moves in straight lines: any number of squares up, down, left or right, as long as nothing is in the way.

It cannot jump over pieces. It takes an enemy piece by landing on its square, and it stops there.

A rook is worth about 5 pawns. Rooks get strong late in the game, when the board opens up and they can use whole rows and columns.

Try it

♟♖

Move the rook to every circled square (a5) in as few moves as you can.
