Pawn promotion in chess: what happens when a pawn reaches the end?
When a pawn reaches the last row it is promoted: you swap it for a queen, rook, bishop or knight of your colour. Almost always you choose a queen.
You can promote even if you still have your original queen, so it is possible to have two or more queens.
Because a pawn can become a queen, a pawn that no enemy pawn can stop (a passed pawn) is a big deal late in the game.
Try it
Push a pawn to the last row. It becomes a queen.
