How do you get out of check in chess?

There are exactly three ways: move the king to a safe square, block the line between the attacker and your king, or take the piece that is giving check.

A check from a knight cannot be blocked, because the knight jumps. Two checks at once (a double check) can only be answered by moving the king.

If none of the three works, it is checkmate.
